"A Pink Heart" is an award and beauty service that every military spouse deserves. The gift of self-confidence is priceless. "A Pink Heart" creates a path to the invaluable gift of helping to build the self-esteem of those whose spouses are making the selfless gift of military service for the United States of America. That military service promotes peace, harmony and the protection of American ideals. "A Pink Heart" is a service in a hair salon, with the main objective being to reach out to military spouses, and meet their beauty needs at a fraction of the price of similar services at a mainstream salon. Special targets of "A Pink Heart" are Spouses of Deployed Soldiers. The program will create an outlet for the spouses of deployed soldiers to maintain or regain their strength, and continue to build their self-confidence through beauty treatments at no cost or a small voluntary donation. Today was my first day of protegeeing on the floor. The beginning process of cosmetology school starts with six weeks of core class which is solely academics and working on texture, color, cut, and all hair techniques using a mannequin head. After passing a practical exam and written exam at the beginning of week six, I started protegeeing. Protegeeing is shadowing another future professional on the salon floor and learning new techniques when working with a guest. I was very fortunate that my first protegee experience was with a future professional name Karen. Our guest wanted a bleach retouch on her previous highlights and some low lights added in to give the hair some contrast. Karen took me under her wing and trusted me with the tools that I had learned in core and allowed me to be hands-on and helps every step of the way. I was incredibly grateful for that experience. read more
For the past few weeks I have been debating whether or not to make "A Pink Heart" a nonprofit organization. I was struggling to come up with a clear business plan and needed help and did not know who to turn to. My answer to this all came at my husband's first squadron barbecue. At this barbecue, there was a woman who was great friends with the host of the party. Her husband also flies F-16's but was not in the same squadron and is currently deployed in Baghdad. She just came over to meet the rest of us. We started taking and I told her my story about going to Cosmetology school and she told me her story. She had wanted to go back to school, so as soon as they found out they were going to be stationed at Luke Air Force Base, she went back to school and finished at Arizona State University. When I asked her what she majored in, she replied, "non-profit organizations." I was baffled, there was my answer, "A Pink Heart" was going to be a non-profit organization and this spouse of a deployed soldier offered to help me learn the in's and out's of non-profits to get me started on my mission of "A Pink Heart" becoming a national non-profit organization. read more

This week has been an adventure. My husband, 1Lt. Jordan Kahn and I moved from Vance Air Force base in Enid, Oklahoma to Surprise, Arizona where he will report to duty on Jan 15th and start Training in the F-16 "Fighting Falcon" at Luke Air Force Base. Needless to say, this has been an incredibly busy week which included driving 19 hours in two days, finding a house, moving in, getting settled, and to top it off I am suppose to be starting school Paul Mitchell the School Phoenix full time this next Tuesday. I have been feeling a bit overwhelmed and I am not confident that I am making the right choice. Cosmetology school is a large expense, our house is full of boxes, I am not sure if I am ready to take on a full time 9-4:30 school day, and there is no way we will be settled by Tuesday. read more
